Current and Future Laboratory Space

Missouri S&T continues to expand and modernize its laboratory facilities to support interdisciplinary research, hands-on student learning and collaboration with industry partners. These spaces enable faculty and students to pursue cutting-edge discoveries while developing solutions to real-world challenges.

The university’s Center for Biomedical Research is a multidisciplinary research center dedicated to the research and development of advanced biomaterials, devices and therapeutics for applications in the biomedical industry. The center specializes in bioactive glass science and engineering, including the use of bioactive glass and ceramic scaffolds to regenerate bone and heal soft tissue wounds, and who are developing biomarkers for early detection of cancer.

Bioplex Closeup View at the Edge of the Oval

S&T’s Bioplex is a new construction project located within the Havener Arrival Complex, anchoring the south side of the Oval, immediately north of the James E. Bertelsmeyer Hall. The project represents Missouri S&T’s largest capital project ever. The research and education facility will attract exceptional faculty and students to solve critical challenges at the intersection of engineering, medicine and biology.

missouri protoplex building

The Missouri Protoplex serves as a hub for the network of companies S&T is building through partnerships with the Missouri Association of Manufacturers, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, and other universities, community colleges and technical schools across the state. In addition to offering an opportunity for manufacturers to learn about new methods and technologies, the full-sized advanced manufacturing machines housed in the Protoplex will enable S&T students to be industry-ready to build Missouri’s innovative products of the future.

Schrenk Hall building

The newly renovated Schrenk Hall houses the university’s biological sciences and chemistry departments. The original portion of Schrenk Hall was built in 1938. The latest project renovated the building’s 83,000-square-foot west wing, which was added in 1973. This is the second phase of a multiphase renovation project. The renovation addressed deferred maintenance issues related to energy conservation and infrastructure, including updates to the roof, windows, mechanical and electrical equipment. The repurpose also built upon existing space to increase the building’s capacity for laboratories.
